Choosing a template is the first real decision you make when building a Joomla site, and it's a more consequential one in 2026 than it used to be. Joomla 6 tightened its technical requirements (PHP 8.3+, MySQL 8.0.13+ or MariaDB 10.4+), dropped several legacy compatibility shims by default, and expects templates built on modern Bootstrap 5 markup. A template that hasn't been actively updated for Joomla 5/6 can break silently — missing styles, broken mega menus, or JavaScript errors from old jQuery-plugin syntax that Bootstrap 5 no longer supports.

So "free" isn't the only filter that matters here. Every template below is either still actively maintained for Joomla 5/6, or — in Cassiopeia's case — ships directly with Joomla core, so you never have to worry about compatibility drift.

What to check before you pick one

Before you fall in love with a demo, confirm three things:

• Joomla version support. Look for an explicit "Joomla 5.x / 6.x" compatibility note, not just "responsive" or "modern."
• Framework dependency. Some templates (Helix Ultimate, Astroid) are really frameworks — you get a base template plus a system for building your own layouts. Others are single, fixed designs. Decide which one you actually need.
• Update cadence. A template last updated in 2022 is a liability on Joomla 6, even if the demo still looks fine. Check the changelog date, not just the marketing page.

1. Cassiopeia — the safest default

Cassiopeia is Joomla's own default template and ships with every Joomla installation, so there's nothing to download or install separately. It's built on Bootstrap 5, is accessibility- and SEO-friendly out of the box, and — because it's maintained by the Joomla project itself — it's guaranteed to stay compatible with every new Joomla release the day it comes out.

• Best for: developers who want a clean, dependable base to override rather than a drag-and-drop page builder
• Framework: none — plain Joomla template overrides
• Compatibility: Joomla 5.x / 6.x (core)

It's not flashy, but for client sites where long-term stability matters more than visual flair, Cassiopeia with a set of custom overrides is often the more defensible choice than a heavier third-party framework.

2. Helix Ultimate — the most widely used free framework

Helix Ultimate by JoomShaper is arguably the most popular free Joomla template framework in active use today, and it's a natural fit if you're already working with SP Page Builder. It's built on Bootstrap 5, includes a drag-and-drop layout manager, a menu builder with 9 predefined header styles, real-time preview for desktop/tablet/mobile, and full multilingual support. Officially, Helix Ultimate 2.2.x supports Joomla 4.4, 5.4, and 6.0.

One practical note: the download includes both the template and a separate Helix Ultimate plugin. The plugin isn't optional — without it, the template won't render correctly — so make sure both pieces are installed and kept updated together.

3. Astroid Framework — the open-source drag-and-drop alternative

Astroid Framework started as a commercial product from JoomDev, was open-sourced in 2021, and is now actively maintained by TemPlaza and the wider community. It's a strong alternative to Helix if you want a framework rather than a fixed design: a layout builder, typography controls, mega menu, offcanvas menu, RTL support, and Font Awesome 6 icons, all built for Joomla 4, 5, and 6.

• Best for: developers who want full layout control without hand-coding a template from scratch

Because it's open source, you can also fork it on GitHub if you ever need to patch something the community hasn't gotten to yet — not something you can say about most free template frameworks.

4. Blank by JoomLead — a genuinely minimal starting point

Blank does exactly what its name promises: it's a clean, typography-focused starting point built on the Gantry 5 Framework, with no bundled demo content or opinionated design choices to strip out. It's actively maintained — the changelog shows updates through March 2026 — and lists Joomla 5.x/6.x compatibility explicitly.

If you've ever spent more time removing a template's built-in demo styling than actually designing, Blank is worth a look.

5. JA Purity IV — a mature, page-builder-friendly option

JoomlArt's Purity line has been around since the Joomla 1.5 days, and the current version, Purity IV, is built on their T4 Framework with a drag-and-drop layout system, dark theme switcher, and 25+ predefined pages covering business, corporate, and news/magazine layouts. It's available directly from joomlart.com.

• Best for: content-heavy business or magazine sites that want a polished look without a lot of custom design work
• Framework: T4 Framework
• Compatibility: check the current release notes on JoomlArt's site before deploying to a Joomla 6 site — JoomlArt updates Purity IV regularly, but framework-level Joomla 6 support should be confirmed per release rather than assumed

I'm including it because it's genuinely well built and widely used, but unlike the four templates above, I couldn't independently confirm current Joomla 6 compatibility at the framework level — verify that on a staging install before you commit a client site to it.

Quick comparison

Before you go live on any of them

Whichever template you pick, install it on a staging copy of the site first, not production. Check three things specifically: that mega menus and offcanvas mobile menus render correctly, that any Bootstrap 5 JavaScript components (modals, tooltips, popovers) work without console errors, and that the template doesn't silently depend on the Backward Compatibility plugin being enabled — Joomla 6 ships that plugin disabled by default, and a template that quietly relies on it will look fine in testing and break for real visitors the moment it's off.
